VICTORIA FALLS

The Victoria Falls is the most impressive cascade of water 100 m deep into a basalt gorge and 1.5 km wide, sending spray 300 m high into the sky over the rain forest. It is known locally as “The Smoke That Thunders” and almost all safaris to Zimbabwe, Zambia and Botswana should include a visit to this spectacular sight. The town has grown considerably and is a hive of activity. Things to do include guided tours of the Falls; the best one day white water rafting trip in the world; bungee jumping 111 m off the bridge; river boarding; kayaking; sunset cruises on the Upper Zambezi; tribal dancing and villages; craft markets; crocodile farms; helicopter flips over the Falls; horse riding; golfing; elephant rides, picnic lunches on Livingstone Island and lolling in the comfort of your hotel.

Victoria Falls Safari Lodge
A spectacular sunset view overlooking a busy waterhole, which adjoins the Zambezi National Park 4 km from the hustle and bustle of town. It has 66 spacious bedrooms and 6 split level suites each with private balconies under thatch. A courtesy bus does hourly transfers to town. Good hotel for children. A night can be spent at Songwe Point traditional village which overlooks the Victoria Falls gorge and where some of the mysteries of Africa are unravelled.

The Victoria Falls Hotel
Famous for its traditional elegance, with terraces overlooking the Falls. It dates from the turn of the century as part of Cecil Rhodes’ dream of building a railway from Cape Town to Cairo. It has recently being extended with 135 rooms and 6 suites and is beautifully refurbished in the old colonial style. Very establishment.

Elephant Camp
At Victoria Falls, offers guests the chance to ride and walk with their African elephants - Miss Ellie, Jock, Jumbo and Jack. Spend the day with them, helping to wash and feed them, and learn about their behaviour. Available as a day excursion or as an overnight experience, for a maximum of eight guests.

Other Victoria Falls options are IIala Lodge, Sekuti’s Drift, Masuwe Lodge, Matetsi River Lodge and Matetsi Safari Lodge. (See Zambia for Tongabezi, Sindabezi, Livingstone Island and The River Club).
