WHEN TO
GO
January to March
Summer and the rainy season, only a few camps open due
to the limited network of graded roads, Tafika operates
river safaris from mid Feb, rivers flood and oxbow lagoons
fill up, hot weather with afternoon thunderstorms, bush is
lush and green and game dispersed, beautiful photographic
light, migratory birds, incredible sunsets, few tourists
April to May
Potential rain storms around, warm to hot days, the bush is
very green and the grass long, birding is excellent with
migrants still around, game viewing is good but limited
network of graded roads, Victoria Falls water levels
extremely high and impressive
June to July
Start of the dry season and remote bush camps in the South
Luangwa open, mid winter so it can be very cold at night and
on early morning game drives, with clear, cool to warm days,
game viewing is good to excellent
August
Varies from cool to hot but can still have cold spells, bush
dry with lagoons obviously shrinking, game viewing excellent
and increasing
September
Hot, dry and hazy, trees flower and lose leaves, game
viewing is excellent, Carmine bee-eaters nesting through to
November, excellent fishing on the Lower Zambezi
October
Very dry with excellent game viewing, should have occasional
rain to cool it down and clear the air, can be very hot (40(
in the shade!), new growth starts and newborns arrive, end
of the dry season with all remote camps in the South Luangwa
closing except Tafika, good fishing, Victoria Falls
extremely low
November to December
Hot and humid, early rains can be very dramatic and
exciting with wind, dark clouds, shafts of light and sheet
lightening, bush is green, fresh and very beautiful, time of
birth especially for impala, the migrant birds arrive and so
excellent bird watching, game viewing good, remote roads
start to close as the rains increase.
