African Walking Safaris

An African walking safari is more than a holiday experience; it is a true adventure and a profound learning experience that you will never forget. A vehicle based African safari holiday will certainly give the opportunity to cover a lot of ground and indeed you are likely to see a great variety of animals but it is the opportunity to get up close and personal with nature that is the thrill of walking. As soon as you are on foot you become part of it – you can hear, smell and feel the bush as well as see it. There are no noises except for the wildlife and you, so every noise, every smell and every rustle has a story to tell and with time, patience and a good guide you can learn to understand it. Eventually your gaze becomes alert to the slightest movement; your ears aware of every sound. This is safari at its very best.

You generally do not see as much large wildlife on foot as you do when driving but you will have an opportunity to see the tracks, signs and smaller indications of wildlife giving a finer perspective. Walking through magical and diverse landscapes and seeing things not always available from a 4WD safari vehicle is a live, sharp, spine tingling experience that is very hard to beat!

Your guide will always give you a thorough brief before you set off and it is important that you listen and follow instructions as they are given. As a rule you will walk in single file although this does not mean that you cannot stop to whisper a question to your guide. Binoculars and cameras should be immediately accessible and a hat and sun block essential.

As African safari specialists we can arrange itineraries that include walking from a few hours a day to five or more days with different levels of accommodation. Some walking options include luxury lodges as the base to explore the surrounding areas whilst others have bush camps in remote areas. A good tailor made safari will combine many different aspects so do please contact us to chat through the options.
