THE SERENGETI

Northern Tanzania is best known for the 14,763 km2 Serengeti National Park and is home to the largest migration of zebra and wildebeest in Africa. These "endless plains" range from huge rolling golden hills dotted with acacia trees in the north, to the flat short grass plains with dramatic rocky kopjes in the south. The park has over 500 bird species and is renowned for its huge lion population It is best to visit 2 camps for 3 nights each to ensure a sighting of the migration, as its movement is dependent on the rains.

Grumeti Camp is situated in the Western Corridor of the Serengeti and has a great sundowner spot on the Kirawira Hills, overlooking the plains. The migration should pass through this area between June and July, crossing the Grumeti River, which has some of Africa's largest crocodiles. Accommodation for 20 guests is in large marquee-style tents. with open air showers. The camp has a plunge pool overlooking the river. Accommodation, service and food are the high standard expected of CCAfrica's camps.

Klein's Camp adjoining the Northern Serengeti National Park, has a spectacular view across the golden rolling plains of the Northern Serengeti on private Maasai land. Accommodation for 16 guests is in en suite cottages. The lodge has a pool and offers game drives, trips to a local Maasai manyatta and hill walks behind camp. The migration usually moves through this area around September and November. Accommodation, service and food are of the high standard expected of CCAfrica's camps.

Migration Camp is situated in the central Serengeti, close to the Lobo area and one would expect to see the migration here around May - July and again in early December. Accommodation For 28 guests is in large Meru style tents on teak platforms with ensuite facilities overlooking the plains. The food is fantastic and the staff are really enthusiastic. They have an extensive library and a pool.

Balloon Safaris can be booked from a prearranged site near Seronera and are an amazing experience! Costs from $385 per person for an hour's flight including champagne breakfast. A night at the Serengeti Serena is usually required.
