Malawi is a landlocked country of striking scenery with broad
green plateaux, towering mountains and lakes, bordered by
Tanzania, Zambia
and Mozambique. It is known as the warm heart of Africa
because of the hospitality of its people. Many people utilise
Lake Malawi, which covers nearly a third of the country, as
a relatively inexpensive beach destination at the end of a
safari in Zimbabwe, Zambia
or Tanzania. The main industries are plantations of tung oil,
coffee, tobacco, fishing, and tourism is relatively undeveloped
with only a handful of bush camps and safari operations.
Air Malawi and British Airways fly from London to Llongwe
(via Harare).
Camps are generally accessed by a combination of road
transfers, scheduled internal Air Malawi flights and light
aircraft charter flights. There is also a regular scheduled
service to Mfuwe in Zambia,
which combines very well with a safari in the South
Luangwa Valley.
