Zambia’s Luangwa Valley is situated at the end of the Great Rift Valley and is one of Africa’s most unspoilt wilderness areas. South Luangwa National Park is the richest park in Zambia and one of the finest wildlife sanctuary’s in Africa for diversity of wildlife and scenic variation.
Covering an area of over 3,500 square miles through which the meandering Luangwa River runs, this is a land of ox bow lagoons, woodland and vast plains that are dotted with valleys that play host to huge concentrations of game. Walking safaris originated in this park and this is still one of the finest ways to experience this pristine wilderness first hand, the changing seasons adding to the Park’s richness.
Lodges in South Luangwa stay open for as long as access is possible, depending on their location. The greater part of the lodges and camps are privately run by safari operating companies, who meet their guests at Lusaka Airport, and fly them to Mfuwe, on the outskirts of the Park. Most of the lodges are situated on the ox bow lakes of the old river course, while some of the bush camps are more inland.
