Nkwali Camp

Nkwali is located on private land in an area of ebony woodland overlooking open grass plains, and is famous for its numerous giraffe and leopard sightings. Being located in the central ’all weather’ area the camp offers a longer season than most camps. This is a place where one feels close to nature and can experience the true feel and flavour of the Zambian wilderness. Elephants often cross the Luangwa and can be seen from the camp’s bar or from the atmospheric, thatched dining room, when they converge on the nearby waterhole. Undeniably a camp for safari connoisseurs...

Location:
Situated on Robin Pope’s private land, overlooking the South Luangwa National Park.

Accommodation and facilities:
Accommodation is in six rooms, each with a thatched roof, bamboo walls, and twin beds (or a king-size double) surrounded by a large mosquito net. All are expansive, stylish and well appointed with en suite toilet and shower in a charming open-sided bathroom. The communal areas are subject to welcoming and cooling breezes to quell the heat of the day. The bar is creatively built around an enormous ebony tree and meals are served in the separate dining area overlooking a small lagoon which often attracts elephants and bushbuck to drink. The camp also benefits from a superb swimming pool.

Activities:
Activities here focus on the surrounding abundance of wildlife, with game drives in open 4x4 safari vehicles accompanied by qualified and knowledgeable guides. Guided night drives are also conducted, when guests have the opportunity to see the area’s many nocturnal species. South Luangwa game walks, considered by many to be the best in Southern Africa, are led by a qualified guide and an armed scout.

Special attractions:
Set apart from the camp, on the banks of the Luangwa River and near the swimming pool, Robin’s House provides a further accommodation option for visitors. Available for guests to enjoy on an exclusive basis and affording superb views of the river and the animals that come down to drink, it nestles under a grove of large trees and is well shaded with large windows allowing light to flood in.
