Shoebill Island Camp

Shoebill Island Camp is the only camp in the remote and rarely visited Bangweulu Swamps and offers simple accommodation in safari tents under thatched roofs.

The camp sleeps twelve, with each twin-bedded tent having its own toilet and shower. The island has panoramic views over the papyrus swamps along the Lukulu River, which are the breeding ground of the shoebill, a massive grey, dodo like bird found nowhere else in the sub-region. Bangweulu is probably the best place remaining in the world to see shoebill storks in the wild.

Activities depend on the time of year and you will either travel through the swamps by banana boat or dugout canoe or be taken on guided walks over the floating reed-bed in search of shoebills and other wildlife. Game drives will also take you to the drier areas of the plains to see the huge herds of endemic black lechwe.

In terms of the best time to visit, March and April offer an amazing water-wilderness for the adventurous with shoebills often visible from camp! The main season is from May to August when shoebills can usually be seen on canoe trips. September to November offer great birding (though maybe no shoebill sightings) and the same amazing mammal spectacles.
