Deep in the remote heart of Northern Zambia lies a majestic home built in the wilderness by a remarkable man over eighty years ago...this is Shiwa Ng’andu.
Three years ago, this remarkable house and estate of Sir Stewart Gore-Browne and his wife Lorna, and later their eldest daughter and family, was on the brink on collapse. In November of 1999, Charles Harvey, the eldest grandson of Sir Stewart, his wife Jo, and children, Tom and Emma, bought the house and estate from other family members and its revival and future now rests in their hands.
Shiwa House is open to both day visitors and resident house guests. At present the house can accommodate four to five couples in delightful rooms, all with en suite bathrooms and finished with original hardwood furnishings and paintings. Guests have the complete run of the house and many spend as a lot of time enjoying the library and Sir Stewart’s book and record collections. Fires are lit every night and the atmosphere at Shiwa is unique. The food is good, simple and wholesome farm fare, with the smell of fresh bread filling the early morning air.
The summer days are crisp and clear and while the winter can be quite cold, the house remains warm, comfortable and friendly. The well maintained gardens are alive with beautiful flowers to complement the manicured lawns and the lawns. Activities are plentiful with game viewing, boating on the lake, fishing, superb bird watching, horse riding for the experienced, river walks, historical drives and walks, meeting the people on the estate and visits to the local schools and hospital.
