Ngamba Chimpanzee sanctuary was established in 1998 to provide a permanent home for the chimpanzees that Uganda Wildlife Authority was rescuing from poachers and traders.
Ngamba Island is 100 acres of rainforest situated 23 kms from Entebbe. It supports a rich diversity of natural wildlife and provides a variety of natural foods for the chimpanzees. The island is set up as an eco-friendly project with compost toilets, rainwater collection, proper waste management practices and solar energy.
Visitors can have an overnight stay here and are accommodated in twin-bedded tents, each on their own platform over the water’s edge, complete with ensuite facilities and solar light. During an overnight visit, you will have the opportunity to view two day time feedings of the chimpanzees, as well as morning and evening feeds at the holding facility. It is also possible to do a forest walk, with a group of infant chimpanzees for company – a very special experience!
