Kampala is the capital city of Uganda. It is located in the South Central part of the country close to the shores of Lake Victoria. The people of Kampala, and Ugandans in general, are kind, friendly and approachable.
Kampala, with a population of approximately 1 million, is by far the largest city in Uganda, but it is not yet completely overwhelmed with traffic like Nairobi. Additionally, Kampala is very safe to walk around, even at night.
Kampala’s principal attractions include the Uganda Museum, the Kasubi tombs - where the remains of the Kings of Buganda were buried, the Nommo art gallery, the National Theatre, the Rubaga and Namirembe Cathedrals and the Parliament of Uganda (and Independence Monument).
The Owino market is one of the largest in this region of Africa. The endless booths that line the chaotic alleys of Owino offer a mind-boggling array of everything from homemade irons to American hand-me-down-clothes, with the Goodwill price tags still on them, to an amazing array of African foods. Everything at Owinio starts cheap and gets cheaper with bargaining.
