Sanctuary Gorilla Forest Camp is a luxurious tented camp perched on the side of a mountain in the Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. It overlooks the park in a southerly direction and is the ideal base for gorilla tracking and birding excursions in the park. The camp has been designed to blend seamlessly into the environment, carefully appointed towards the misty valleys and looming, forest-clad mountains that protect this fragile eco-system.
Location:
Situated on a mountainside in the Bwindi Impenetrable National Park.
Accommodation and facilities:
Accommodation is in eight double tents, raised on wooden platforms, each with ensuite facilities including, unusually, a bathtub looking out onto the forest. Each tent has a spacious wooden veranda where guests can relax and/or enjoy a private meal. There is a bar and dining cottage overlooking the rain forest, as well as a raised natural platform for open air dining.
Activities:
Gorilla tracking is a year round activity, with no season. Experienced guides accompany you on your tracking, which commences every morning. There is a daily maximum of eight visitors to each gorilla group. The gorillas cover large distances overnight and they are never constantly in one area. Because of this, the time taken to track gorillas varies enormously, from as little as half an hour to as much as nine hours. Once the gorillas are located, the group is allowed a maximum of one hour with them, before returning to camp.
Special attractions:
At night, a traditional African campfire is lit from where a lecture might be given by a visiting primatologist or guests can simply sit and admire the myriad brilliance of Bwindi’s crystal clear mountain sky.
