Being its second tallest building; 236 Hurumzi stands aloof among the mosque minarets, Hindu temple towers, and church spires that form Zanzibar’s Stone Town skyline. Apt in many ways, as it reflects its position as one of the highest regarded bastions of hospitality on the whole island.
Once the palatial residence of one of the richest men in the Swahili Empire, the hotel has been masterfully restored to recreate the wondrous atmosphere and grandeur that it knew in its former days. Furnishings are all Zanzibari antiques of varied origins and styles that, together, evoke the atmosphere and impression of Arabian Nights and sultan princesses. Each of the nine guestrooms and seven suites are infused with beauty and romance, each representing Zanzibari traditions in a distinct way. Apart from the Kipembe (traditional bath and shower) each room is equipped with a delightful large stone bathtub providing guests with a unique bathing pleasure. Ceiling fans, along with the constant breeze keep the rooms cool on the upper floors, while the South room and the second and first floor rooms are equipped with air conditioning for added comfort. The sultan sized rooms and suites and are all adorned with beautifully hand carved woodwork, original stucco décor, hand painted glass lamps and window panes, and all the rooms have large Zanzibari beds complete with netting.
The Tower Top Restaurant is a diner’s delight and is undoubtedly one of the most romantic restaurants in the world. Featuring a panoramic view of Stone Town and a spectacular view of the Indian Ocean, it is the perfect to watch the sun set. Here, an impressive eighty two steps above Stone Town and sitting on Persian carpets, guests have the distinct feeling of having a gastronomic ride on a magic carpet. The dining room is open on all sides and exquisitely prepared dishes are served in five or more courses, accompanied by the sights and sounds of exotic Zanzibar. At ground level you will find the noted Kidide Café Restaurant, an ideal place to enjoy lunch.
A new addition to the hotel is La Opala, which sells locally hand crafted fine gold and silver jewellery and specialises in tanzanite, semi precious and precious stones and settings.
There are many activities to enjoy, including exploring the winding alleys, bazaars, and ancient buildings of Stone Town and excursions to the spice plantations and Jozani Forest.
