Ras Kutani, Mainland

Tatler Magazine describe Ras Kutani as ’one of the best beach hideaways in the world’ and it is not difficult to see why - the location is perfect - set on a crescent of deserted white sandy beach, washed by the gentle surf of the temperate Indian Ocean, twenty miles south of Dar es Salaam, Ras Kutani provides total escape from the outside world. This is a dream environment to relax in a hammock on your own private bamboo veranda and simply soak up paradise!

Accommodation is in nine spacious cottages and four suites all constructed of natural, local materials that harmonise perfectly with the wonderful surroundings. Each cottage nestles within a cooling canopy of indigenous trees, has a king size bed, full en suite bathroom and a large veranda with Swahili day beds, hammocks and magnificent ocean views. All are completed with ethnic furnishings that echo and reflect Tanzania’s rich cultural heritage.  The suites are situated above the canopy and in addition have their own private plunge pool.

The communal area is set within a soaring thatched structure with an open-plan bar and dining area which afford superb views of the beach, lagoon and the ocean. The cuisine is a delicious combination of chef’s ‘Fruits of the Indian Ocean’, consisting of the readily available local fish and crustaceans, and succulent Pan-African dishes.

Whilst relaxation is definitely the keynote at Kinasi there are many other activities to enjoy when you are feeling active such as body boarding, surfing, kayaking and snorkelling. There are some superb nature walks through the indigenous coastal forest. Guided walks to local inland or fishing villages along the coast are offered (subject to tides) and birding is particularly good. There are many beautiful variations of moth and butterfly to observe.
