Matemwe Bungalows

Matemwe is an intimate and exclusive lodge perched on a rocky coral outcrop above a magnificent stretch of beach in north-east Zanzibar. This is the rural part of the island, renowned for its natural beauty and the finest weather in Zanzibar - known to the locals as ’the sunny side of paradise’.

Matemwe consists of twelve thatched bungalows nestled in lush tropical gardens above a pearly white beach, all with superb views out over the Indian Ocean. Each of the suites has a private veranda with hammocks and couches, king size beds and spacious bathrooms with deep bathtubs and walk-in showers.

Matemwe is famous for its excellent food which is enjoyed in the open-air restaurant overlooking the ocean. The house speciality is seafood, with the lodge being a daily stop for the fishermen who sell fresh crab, lobster and fish. Dinner is a delicious and eclectic choice of main courses prepared with ocean fresh seafood combined with island spices, exotic fish, meat and vegetarian dishes. Lunch is served buffet style and offers a mixture of African and European flavours.

Matemwe is a place to relax and rejuvenate and boasts a multi-level swimming pool surrounded with lounge chairs overlooking the ocean where you can enjoy freshly mixed cocktails served from the poolside bar.

Activities available:

This is a perfect place for water activities - local snorkelling and diving sites are suitable for all levels of experience, from beginners to experienced divers. Variety is the key word on the reefs with hard corals, sponges and anemones and an amazing range of fish species being found here. You might find dolphins in the water that come close to your boat to show off or even spot a whale passing by the reef (usually between  August and October).

Sailing and motor trips are available where you can discover the little island of Mnemba Atoll that lies directly opposite Matemwe.

Visits to the neighbouring village can be arranged to explore the local Zanzibar culture and village life and learn about the community projects that Matemwe is involved in.

Day-trips can also be arranged to the historic centre of Stone Town, Jozani Forest or Prison Island. Spice Tours are also available - a highly interesting way to learn about the great variety of spices that the island is famous for.

For guests seeking even more privacy, we can recommend the brand new Matemwe Retreat – three stunning, two storey villas with private beach access, plunge pool, private staff and huge bath tub overlooking the Indian Ocean!
