Fundu Lagoon, Pemba

Fundu Lagoon is a peaceful and idyllic lodge set on a secluded beach on the south west of Pemba Island only accessible by a thirty minute boat ride from Zanzibar. As soon as you step off the boat on to the long jetty you arrive in a romantic, island paradise designed for couples and groups of friends looking to escape the holiday crowds as well as divers and water-sports lovers looking for a perfect combination of quality activities and luxury. Whatever you’re looking for, Fundu Lagoon is a relaxed haven of peace and outstanding natural beauty.

Sixteen idyllic ’castaway retreats’ accessed via sandy walkways present the ultimate in sumptuous tented lodgings. Built on hardwood, stilted decks under a palm-thatch roof with large, private balconies overlooking the ocean, these are the epitome of ’beach chic’.  The spacious and stylishly decorated interiors have a king size bed wrapped in flowing mosquito netting, an en suite bathroom and a mini-bar. There are four beachside suites with their own private plunge pool and chill-out lounge. (Three of these suites are on the beach, the other a little further back, set amongst the trees). The venue for dinner changes each evening; sometimes served on the deck close to the jetty and illuminated by lanterns or at other times, in the open-walled restaurant or on the beach under the stars. The food varies each day, but is mainly international in style with some use of local ingredients; seafood is regularly on the menu for dinner, as is fruit for breakfast and dessert. There are two bars - the Restaurant Bar has a small, quiet lounge area ideal for an aperitif or after dinner coffee and liqueurs and a short stroll away, the larger Jetty Bar, which forms a stunning setting for occasional traditional Swahili barbecues and, during the day, a beautiful spot for sunbathing.

Renowned as one of the top diving locations in the world, Fundu caters for the more energetic guest with a fully-equipped PADI diving Centre and a wide range of water-sports including snorkelling, sailing, fishing, water-skiing and kayaking. The nearby mangroves are perfect for exploring by canoe and as the sun goes down there is no better or more romantic way to appreciate the beauty of the surrounding islands than on a dhow sunset cruise. Pampering is always high on the agenda at Fundu and guests can enjoy the ultimate in lazy relaxation with a visit to the Lagoon Spa for a massage or range of beauty treatments.
