Chapwani Island is a small island paradise just a fifteen minute boat ride from the main island of Zanzibar and Stone Town. The island is approximately half a mile long and just two hundred yards wide and is surrounded by small coves with white sandy beaches and coral reefs. The thick tropical vegetation of baobabs, palm trees and passion fruits, harbours a small historic graveyard and rich wild-life including a herd of indigenous Duiker Chapwani (miniature antelopes).
Accommodation is limited to five semi-detached, thatched bandas nestling in coconut palms, thick baobabs and mangrove trees on a beautiful golden strip of beach. The rooms are furnished in Zanzibari decor, each with a four-poster bed, en suite bathroom with hand shower, ceiling fan and banana leaf shutter to allow the sea breeze to flow through the room. There is a shared veranda and sun loungers which can be taken to the beach.
Dining is taken in the open-plan restaurant on the water’s edge and is a unique blend of Oriental, African and European cuisine using local ingredients, such as crayfish, prawn and lobster fresh from the ocean. All are served with a good selection of South African wines. There is a relaxing bar, perfect for sundowners and great conversation!
This is a timeless place, where recreation is relaxed and informal; activities mainly centre on the wonderful beach and secluded coves which are ideal for sunbathing. If you are feeling more active you can enjoy a game of beach volleyball, try your hand at archery or have a game of pentanque. There are trips available to Prison Island (Changuu) to see the giant endangered Aldabra tortoises, superb snorkelling, island walks and fishing on a local boat. Chapwani can also arrange guided tours of Stone Town, Jozani Forest (home to the Red Colobus monkey) and the spice plantations.
