Selous

The Selous is the largest game reserve in Africa and is a vast remote and wild land, dramatically contrasting with Tanzania’s other parks in many ways. Despite its size, covering some 19,500 square miles (the largest game reserve on the African continent), the Selous Game Reserve is one of Tanzania’s least known destinations. This is an exciting and intriguing area, abundant in wildlife, expansive plains and magnificent lakes. Game drives, walking and river safaris are the order of the day, during which you to start to appreciate and understand the awesome scale and rich diversity of the African wilderness.

The freedom to partake in game drives, walking and boating safaris within the conservation area means that guiding standards are also especially good and can extend to include excellent options to fly-camp overnight in the bush. Whilst this vast area accounts for five percent of the land mass of Tanzania, all options for tourists are high quality, low-impact lodges that provide extremely high standards of accommodation and amenities.

Because of its southern location, Selous hosts a wide spectrum of wildlife attracting a unique combination of East and Southern African species, both resident and migratory and a particularly diverse, curious and colourful assortment of over 440 known species of birds.

The intricate waterways and tributaries of the Rufiji river delta attract a large population of elephant, hippo and crocodile that slide ominously into the water at the sound of a boat. The banks attract different sized herds of plains game depending on the season, as herds disperse after the rains and then regroup when the water sources concentrate, forcing them to risk predator attacks while they take a well needed drink.
