Sand Rivers Selous is often heralded as one of the finest lodges in Africa, offering visitors a unique blend of safari elegance in combination with the excitement and adventure of a genuine bush experience. Set on a rocky peninsula affording magnificent views over the vast sweep of the Rufiji river, its exposed sandbanks are home to hippo, crocodile and spectacular bird life, Sand Rivers is a compact but perfectly formed haven of luxury and authenticity. The cottages are grand and open fronted, the mess imposing, the cooking excellent and the service of the highest quality.

Location:
Situated on the banks of the Rufiji river, ten miles downstream of Stieglers Gorge.

Accommodation and facilities:
There are five standard rooms and two suites, all with large en suite bathrooms, flush toilets and powerful showers. The suites also have their own private plunge pool. The Rhino House is a totally private and exclusive one bedroom house close to the main lodge, which offers guests private dining and a totally exclusive experience in the Selous. Each cottage is completely open-fronted, with an expansive veranda set on stilts, giving each a stunning and private view over the river. The main dining table is made of an enormous tree and is the focus for lunch and dinner. Outside the central mess area is the swimming pool, set into the rocks on the river’s edge. Armchairs and sofas abound, and the bar is close by along with a library that is well stocked with books on the area.

Activities:
Walking safaris, fishing, boating safaris, open sided 4x4 game drives, hides and birding.

Special attractions:
For the more adventurous visitor, Sand Rivers offers fly camping - large mosquito nets are laid out on sand banks or near to a busy waterhole. Simple yet fully equipped, these camps have ice cold drinks, great food, comfortable bedrolls, and toilets and bucket showers set just behind the camp. The perfect combination of intrepid adventure and bush comfort.
