Hatari Safari Lodge

Hatari Lodge comprises of three buildings quite delightfully situated in acacia woodland adjacent to the wildlife rich Momella swamp and with views of the distant and majestic Mount Kilimanjaro. The property was originally known as the Ngongongare Farm and was used as the setting for the classic John Wayne film ’Hatari’. At an altitude of five thousand feet, Hatari offers guests a host of vistas from lakes and craters to magical rain forests and the 4,566 metre high dormant volcano Mount Meru which rises elegantly in the background. A truly magical location complemented by a truly magical lodge!

Location:
Situated on the northern edge of Arusha National Park.

Accommodation and facilities:
The lodge offers nine extremely comfortably furnished rooms, each with an open fireplace and a sumptuous en suite bathroom. Each room has been lovingly decorated in a retro style, evoking the 60’s and 70’s - the time of ’Hatari’ - and the beginning of safaris in Tanzania. The oldest building serves as a large central living and dining room where guests can enjoy delicious cuisine and sit back and relax in the cosy lounge area and bar with a veranda and viewing deck bordered by sweet smelling acacias, offering impressive views of Mount Meru and Mount Kilimanjaro. There is also a well stocked library.

Activities:
Morning game drives to crater highland of Mt Meru, followed by a gentle 2 - 3 hour walk to waterfalls. Afternoon game drives to the Momella Lakes to observe the flamingos and many other wetland bird species at Big Momella. Canoeing on Little Momella Lake to see hippo, buffaloes and waterbuck.

Special attractions:
Every day buffaloes and waterbuck feed here. Warthogs dig around in the ground and numerous giraffes come to visit at the doors of the lodge. Depending on the season, elephants make their way into the meadow, and on moon lit nights, leopards, genets and servals may be seen.  In the trees around the lodge, there are bush babies almost 365 nights of the year. A small lake, known as Silver Lake inhabited frequently by hippos, is within walking distance. As Hatari Lodge is only a few miles away from the nearest Maasai area, part of the activities and experiences offered through the lodge include a visit to a Maasai village to share and enjoy their fascinating culture and customs.
