Occupying a superb viewpoint overlooking a secluded valley of the Spioenkop Game Reserve, in the lee of Spioenkop Hill, Three Trees Hill Lodge sits resplendent in the shadows of the Drakensberg Mountains. Being built on the hillside the lodge allows guests to benefit from outstanding views of the Game reserve’s abundance of roaming wildlife which includes white rhino, giraffe, zebra, eland and kudu, all from the confines of their balcony or bedroom window! This is also a birder’s paradise, being home to over 270 indigenous species from Cape vultures and Lanner falcons to buff streaked chats and fairy flycatchers.
But this is more than just a wildlife retreat, Three Tree Hill Lodge specialises in the history of the 2nd Anglo-Boer War of 1899 – 1902, with the Battle of Spioenkop being the focal point. From here, guests can pay homage to the bravery of both the British and the Boers with visits to the battlefields of Spioenkop and Colenso, close to where Winston Churchill was captured prior to being propelled to political fame. It also affords wonderful opportunities to experience this spectacular countryside up close and gain insights into the difficulties of fighting a war with Victorian impedimenta on this terrain. Rides can also be arranged up onto the top of Spioenkop.
Each of the six twin cottages has full en suite facilities with its own shower and bath from where one can soak up the atmosphere of Spioenkop whilst gazing out over the valley. Being of colonial design, with large verandas; Three Trees is the ideal environment in which to wind down and enjoy nature. Meals are often served outside where one can soak up the views while enjoying the exquisite local cuisine.
The main living area has an open-plan design, with four sets of large double doors leading onto the veranda. The result is a flowing space, where you can relax on a comfy chair, read in the afternoon sun and enjoy convivial dinners. A viewing deck and swimming pool complement the complex allowing total relaxation in a truly African setting. The pool is situated in a secluded area under a large acacia tree, very near to the rooms and the main lodge.
