Overlooking the Battlefields of Isandlwana, just five miles from Rorke’s Drift; Fugitives’ Drift Lodge lies close to the famous site of Fugitives’ Drift, where in 1879, Lieutenants Melvill and Coghill lost their lives trying to save the Queen’s Colour of their regiment, winning the first two posthumous Victoria Crosses in history. The Lodge is now renowned for its battlefield tours to all the Zulu War battle sites in the region
The Lodge provides spacious, luxury en-suite cottages each with a private veranda affording views over the plains flanking the Buffalo River Gorge. One of its most spectacular features is the beautiful, shady, well established garden, home to innumerable birds, and a superb swimming pool situated on a secluded spur on the lip of the Buffalo River gorge. Here guests can enjoy sundowners around a fire under a canopy of Paperbark and Fig, with magical Isandlwana looming on the skyline. Cuisine is in the form of a unique fusion of home and modern flavours, all enjoyed within the splendid atmosphere of a veritable museum of Zulu War memorabilia.
The Guest House was originally the home of Mr Johan Potgieter who was immortalised in Gillian Rattray’s award winning tome ’The Springing of the Year’. Mr Pot’s house has now been turned into the most charming sitting and dining room filled with fascinating memorabilia. The original veranda has been retained, with an outside eating area which has a stunning view across a plain with Isandlwana in the distance. The cottages have large en-suite bedrooms that are individually decorated each with a private veranda offering sweeping views of the reserve and surrounding battlefields. The Guest House has a large swimming pool. Superb food and the highest levels of personal service are a feature of this outstanding facility.
Activities here centre predominantly on the Battlefield tours to Rorke’s Drift, and Isandlwana. You can visit the site where Lieutenants Melvill and Coghill lost their lives. Horse riding and fishing are available on the main reserve as are guided walks. Tours to Masondo and Mangeni Falls are also available. The reserve itself contains wildlife including giraffe, zebra, kudu, hartebeest, wildebeest, waterbuck and a host of smaller antelope, as well as prolific birdlife.
