Grootbos Nature Reserve

Just two hours’ drive from Cape Town, Grootbos Private Nature Reserve is set in 2,500 acres of indigenous bush overlooking the delightful sandy beaches of Walker Bay. During the whale season (May to December), the cliffs of Walker Bay offer some of the best whale watching opportunities in the world when the Southern Right Whales come here to calve, mate and loll around in the breakers just a few metres off shore. The area is also home to huge sea bird colonies and Cape fur seals.

Accommodation is in two lodges set amongst ancient milkwood trees - The classic and elegantly designed Garden Lodge, set in a lush indigenous surrounding, is the ideal family getaway. The new Forest Lodge, with its contemporary and modern style will appeal to the more cosmopolitan visitor. Each have large private balconies allowing you to watch the sun setting over the ocean, are fully en suite and enjoy a host of five star amenities.

As you would expect, dining is a rare treat here, with the chefs preparing gourmet dishes with fish straight from the ocean, fresh vegetables and a host of succulent meats enhanced with flavours from their own herb garden. Award-winning South African wines complement dinner, which is served by candlelight in the restaurant overlooking the Bay.

There are a wide variety of activities for guests to enjoy during their stay. Specialist guides accompany 4x4 drives and walks through the fynbos and forests of the reserve, trips to the nearby coast to view the Southern Right Whales from land, walks along deserted beaches and visits to archaeological and cultural sites. Boat-based whale watching trips are available in addition to boat tours to the nearby seal island to view coastal birds, penguins, seals and great white sharks. Other available activities include golf, horse riding and health and spa treatments.
