Damaraland is one of the most interesting and dramatic regions in Namibia. Referring primarily to a harsh stretch of burnt mountains and rugged semi-desert, the region is just inland from miles of wild, deserted beaches, littered with ghostly shipwrecks and where you are likely to see dolphins frolicking joyously in the surf.
It is one of the most scenic areas in Namibia. Prehistoric water courses with open plains and grassland, massive rocky outcrops and distant mountains create a truly breathtaking landscape and a sublime safari location. Game species include desert elephant, black rhino, ostrich and springbok. In the caves and ravines of the area many prehistoric rock paintings have been found and none more famous than the ‘White Lady’ of the Brandberg.
Sites of special interest include the capital Khorixas, Twyfelfontein (where there is the largest known concentration of Stone Age petroglyphs in the country, Organ Pipes (a mass of perpendicular dolerite pillars located in a river bed), Burnt Mountain and the Petrified Forest.
The area has a wide variety of accommodation ranging from campsites to up market lodges.
