Early morning mists generated by the clash between the icy Atlantic Ocean and the warm desert air of the Skeleton Coast, drift inland along the river sand canyon and provide sustenance to the flora and fauna of the region. This is one of the first vistas you will experience when looking out from Damaraland Camp, a comfortable and friendly camp offering walks and drives in one of the best wilderness areas in the whole of Namibia.
Location:
Situated on the northern face of the Huab River Valley, looking south toward the Brandberg Mountains.
Accommodation and facilities:
Guests are accommodated in ten comfortable, large walk-in safari tents, each with an en-suite bathroom including flush toilet and shower with hot and cold running water. Soaps, shampoos and insect repellents are supplied in each tent and there is also a safe. A stone living area combining the dining room and pub forms the communal area which looks across the spectacularly stark beauty of the Huab Valley. There is a refreshing swimming pool in which to cool off after the heat of the day and a small curio shop.
Activities:
Activities include game drives in 4 x 4 seater open Land Rovers, sundowner drives, guided walking safaris and mountain biking.
Special attractions:
Although wildlife is not concentrated, the rare desert-adapted elephant roams here, as well as gemsbok, springbok, ostrich and other hardy desert animals. What makes this area fascinating is that this is the Africa of old with no fences and local herdsmen with their livestock living side by side with the wildlife. The Torra Community are shareholders in the camp, so they benefit directly from employment and have an equity stake in the venture.
