Impalila Island Lodge is built at the meeting place of two mighty African rivers, the Chobe and the Zambezi, and four countries, Namibia, Zambia, Zimbabwe and Botswana. This is the only place in the world where four countries meet. Impalila Island forms the north-eastern tip of Namibia and lies just forty miles west of Victoria Falls. The surrounding area is an amazing mosaic of waterways, floodplains and bushveld and host to exceptional birdlife, game viewing and vegetation.
Location:
Situated on the banks of the Zambezi River on the eastern Caprivi Strip.
Accommodation and facilities:
Accommodation is offered in eight delightful chalets, each with en suite shower and private veranda for bird watching and uninterrupted water-world views. The central feature of the lodge is an enormous baobab tree which is surrounded by the living and dining areas. The cuisine is outstanding, offered “al fresco” style in a variety of romantic settings under the baobab canopy or perhaps a picnic on a wild island. There is a fully stocked bar and the lodge takes pride in their comprehensive range of South African wines. Guests can also enjoy moonlight dinners on a river sandbank, a private candlelit dinner for two on their own deck or a champagne brunch at the historical baobab.
Activities:
Activities include birding and fishing from motor boats, game-viewing by boat along the Chobe River, mokoro (dugout canoe) excursions to explore the quiet backwaters and expansive floodplains, and guided walks on the island. Picnic lunches and dinners to other parts of the island can also be arranged.
Special attractions:
The Chobe National Park is a short distance away and one of the attractions is to take a late afternoon boat cruise into the Kasai channel and from there into the Park which is renowned for its vast elephant herds, buffalo, lion, hippo and the rare Chobe bushbuck and puku. Elephant cross the Chobe onto Impalila Island and sitatunga can sometimes be seen from Impalila Island Lodge.
