Malawi is a little-known gem of a country in the heart of central southern Africa that offers visitors a luxury safari holiday experience. It is a long and narrow landlocked country, covering more than 600 miles from north to south.
North Malawi
The least known region of the country and with a lower population density, the north of Malawi has been described as the country’s forgotten region. This is a place for those who wish to experience Africa at its most unspoilt. Apart from the area occupied by Lake Malawi, the north is characterised by its great highlands. Most magnificent of all is the Nyika Plateau, which towers majestically to 8,000ft.
Central Malawi
Most visitors to Malawi will arrive at Lilongwe, the capital, so their first view of the country is the Central Region. It gives easy access to the rest of the country, including the Lake, as well as being an exciting region in its own right. Gently undulating landscapes give the area the appearance of a plain although it is at an altitude of 4,000ft. The scenery in Central Malawi is less dramatic than elsewhere in the country but it has the same attractive variety that makes Malawi a wonderful place to tour.
South Malawi
South Malawi is a region of contrasts. Much of the area is dominated by the River Shire which meanders its way southwards crashing over falls and rapids to the broad and flat plains of the Lower Shire Valley. A national park and two game reserves are to be found here. At the southern end of the valley is Elephant Marsh, once the home of thousands of elephants but now famous for its birdlife.
A warm and welcoming country that offers a combination of wonderful scenery, fascinating parks and some of the friendliest people in Africa, Malawi truly deserves its title of ’the friendly heart of Africa.’
WHEN TO GO
The lakeshore areas have low rainfall and a warm relaxing climate. The highland areas have greater temperature changes and nights can be cold.
