Samatian is the Njemps word for a species of fig tree that is used by the Njemps tribe in traditional marriage ceremonies. This is a small island offering breathtaking views across the bronze waters of the Great Rift Valley’s Lake Baringo and the perfect location for a mid-safari break. The beauty of Baringo and her surroundings is legendary – spectacular sunsets, a dazzling array of colourful bird life, Njemps fishermen continuing a trade little changed for over 200 years, and the imposing Laikipia Escarpment creating a magnificent backdrop to the lake and her inhabitants.
Location:
Samatian is a privately owned 30-acre island in the Great Rift Valley’s Lake Baringo.
Accommodation and facilities:
Accommodation is in five open-plan thatched cottages for up to twelve guests, each enjoying a superb view of the lake. All the cottages have adjacent bathrooms and the family chalet, with a double and a twin bedroom, has an open air deck upstairs for stargazing and a wonderful 360-degree view. The open rooms provide a welcome breeze whilst mosquito nets provide protection during the night. In the event of a storm, waterproof blinds are let down to shut out the rain. The dining area, situated next to the large infinity pool, offers a panoramic view of the lake and the rugged Northern Frontier District.
Activities:
With its tranquil surroundings Samatian provides the ultimate place for relaxation, however when you are feeling active you can enjoy boat rides to explore the lake and its inhabitants, including hippo, crocodile and over 450 species of birds. Other activities include, hot springs with steaming pools, lakeside walks and cultural visits to the Njemps and Pokot people.
Special attractions:
Guests can be treated to an excursion to Lake Bogoria to visit the bubbling hot springs and millions of flamingos, leaving after an early morning breakfast to arrive before the heat of the day sets in and the animals and birds are at their most active.
