Mfangano Island Camp is an oasis of tranquillity offering a sublime retreat from the hustle and bustle of modern life. As the island has just one road, the only way to reach Mfangano Island is by light aircraft, an adventure in itself. You land on a dusty airstrip and then it’s a short ride by speedboat to the camp. Your first view is of beautiful gardens with lawns hugging the waterline and a kaleidoscope of flowerbeds and rock gardens surrounding the camp.
Location:
Situated on the eastern part of Lake Victoria, at the mouth of the Winam Gulf.
Accommodation and facilities:
Accommodation comprises six rooms all with stunning views of the lake and offering complete privacy. All have en-suite bathrooms with bath and shower, basin and flush toilet as well as hot and cold running water. Decorated in the ethnic style, all rooms have four poster beds and private verandas, which give them a special charm and romance. Each room is open to the lake and offers uninterrupted views and spectacular sunsets. At the centre of the camp is a cosy sitting room and dining room. The meals here are superb, being a combination of fresh salads and the daily catch served with freshly made crusty bread and chilled wine. The camp also has a small swimming pool made of natural stone overlooking the lake.
Activities:
Activities are plentiful and include – waterskiing, watersports and swimming either in the lake or pool, fishing and boat rides on Lake Victoria. There is stunning bird watching with various walking trails or boat excursions along the lake shore where you will encounter such species as black headed gonolek and double toothed barbet.

Visits to Mfangano Island on Lake Victoria, provide a unique opportunity to see the colourful life on the lake, where enchanting Luo fishing villages have not changed in centuries. For those interested in fishing it is excellent, the bird life is unsurpassed and seeing the families of otters is a delightful added bonus.
