Viewing the wonders of a Kenyan safari is an experience in itself, but doing it on the back of a camel adds a very special flavour. Sabuk is an entrancing haven on the edge of the Laikipia plateau, overlooking the Ewaso Nyiro River and the plains of Laikipia towards Mount Kenya. The Laikipia plateau stretches from the foothills of the Aberdares, across vast open plains to the Northern Frontier District and the Mathews Range. This region nurtures exceptional wildlife and cultural diversity, home to many communities including the Laikipiak Maasai and the Samburu tribes.
Perched high on the riverbanks, Sabuk’s five cottages are open at the front with stunning views of the river and cliffs. Each thatched rondavel (circular cottage) has its own unique design, crafted from local stone and ancient cedar and olivewood, gathered from the local area. En-suite bathrooms, modern flush toilets and a private veranda with a view make each cottage a haven in itself.
Sabuk offers full walking and camel safaris. Led by a professional safari guide and his team of Laikipiak trekkers, guests can choose to fly-camp out in the wilderness for one or several nights before returning to the home comforts of the lodge. Camels are very tall and once you are on their back you will have a great view point for many of the wild animals that you would not see from normal height. Stop for occasional bushwalks and you will be shown the various flora and fauna by your knowledgeable guides. After your time ‘roughing’ it, head back to the lodge and your own private thatched rondavel for a well deserved pampering.
