Translating to ‘Head of the Elephant’ from KiSwahili, Kichwa Tembo is located on a private concession leased from Maasai landlords in the exclusive western Mara – an area that is far less crowded than the eastern part of the Reserve. In addition to an excellent year-round concentration of animals, Kichwa Tembo lies directly in the path of Africa’s spectacular Great Migration from the Serengeti, Tanzania, to the Masai Mara in Kenya. The décor and ambience of the camp recreates the adventurous decadence of a bygone era. Beautifully polished wooden floors, elegant linens, African artefacts, ceiling fans, old fashioned cabin trunks and other original antiques evoke the nostalgic writings of Karen Blixen.
Location:
Situated at the foot of the Oloololo Escarpment on the western border of the Masai Mara National Reserve in south western Kenya.
Accommodation and facilities:
Two intimate camps of nine tented suites each, that epitomise classic elegance with polished wooden floors and ensuite bathrooms with stone-walled showers, twin hand-basins and a separate flush toilet. Each tented suite has a private veranda overlooking the vast game-filled plains of the Masai Mara, and a personal butler who will ensure your every need is catered for. Beautiful antiques adorn the comfortable sitting area and indoor/outdoor dining area, transporting you to the heyday of classic safaris. The camp also features a deep lap pool and a small Safari Shop. Your private butler will serve you delicious Pan African meals in the dining area, on your veranda or in a romantic setting under the stars. Bush breakfasts and candlelit dinners offer an unforgettable experience of the African bush.
Activities:
Morning and afternoon game drives in open 4x4 safari vehicles and exhilarating night drives on the private concession, guided bush walks, Maasai community visits (optional extra) or spectacular sundowners with panoramic views across the Mara.
Special attractions:
Kichwa Tembo is situated below the location where Out of Africa’s famous final scene was filmed; this romantic and totally private camp reflects the ambience of Kenyan safaris of the 1920’s and 30’s.
