Overlooked by the imperious snow capped Mount Kenya, Wilderness Trails is one of Kenya’s major private conservation successes. The camp has been the Craig family home since 1924 when the Craig grandparents came from England and began raising cattle here. ’Leave room for the wildlife’ has been the Craig ethic since the 1920s. This is an area committed to the conservation of wildlife and diverse habitats found on the northern slopes of Mt Kenya and during your stay you will be treated to the company of many endangered species.
Location:
Situated within the 45,000 acre Lewa Wildlife Conservancy on the northern foothills of Mount Kenya.
Accommodation and facilities:
Accommodates eighteen guests in comfortable thatched cottages, all with en suite bathrooms and verandas. The main house is built from cut Kenyan lava stone with a thatched roof beautifully draped with white and fuchsia bougainvillea. There is a superb swimming pool that appears to be dropping away to the valley below permitting breathtaking panoramas. You will join the Craigs on the outdoor dining terrace, which is reached by a natural stone stairway through rock gardens, for your meals. There are three open stone arches which outline views down a steep gorge and up to the volcanic rock on the next hill. The food is fresh grown on the ranch and home-cooked.
Activities:
The camp offers day and night game drives in open 4 wheel drive vehicles, on horseback or camels. There are guided bush walks and excellent birding and photographic opportunities.
Special attractions:
The nearby Lewa swamp hosts a small population of sitatunga and a small elevated hide has been built to offer visitors the opportunity to view this rarely seen semi-aquatic antelope. On night time game drives you may see nocturnal animals such as aardvark, aardwolf, genet, caracal, porcupine, spring hare and galagos.
