Situated on the beautiful Manda Island in Northern Kenya’s Lamu/Kiwayu archipelago, surrounded by magnificent coral gardens, empty beaches and indigenous woodland, Manda Bay is the definitive location to enjoy both an activity or leisurely based holiday. For centuries this has been a calling point for the Arab dhow traders – a safe haven where time stands still and nature is allowed to take its natural course without the interference of the modern world. Hosted by the owners, Caragh and Andy Roberts, the personal attention to detail and to guests is both discreet and most welcoming.
Sixteen spacious cottages line the beach overlooking the Bay’s calm waters, all constructed using typical materials of this area. Eleven of the cottages are on the seafront, with the remainder being situated in a slight recess. All cottages offer splendid views across the Indian Ocean. Each room is painted in shades reminiscent of the colours of the surrounding sea and landscape and enhanced by pieces of local craftwork. All rooms have large ceiling fans and delightful en suite bathrooms.
Close to the cottages are the communal areas, which include a restaurant, relaxation area and bar, with magnificent views over the archipelago. These are the ideal location for a sundowner before enjoying a mouth-watering dinner. The cuisine is a fusion of seafood, including dishes created with tuna-fish, fresh shrimps and mangrove crabs.
Manda Bay is a water sports paradise – its sheltered mangrove creek and calm waters are ideal for a variety of water sports including water skiing, wake boarding, knee boarding and tubing. There is also fleet of five motor-boats available that take guests out on a variety of activities including sight-seeing in the ancient Takwa ruins, bird watching down the creeks and snorkelling in the rich coral gardens on the reef about fifteen minutes from the lodge.
