Kipungani

On the remote south-western tip of Lamu Island, overlooking the tranquil waters of the sheltered Kipungani Channel, Kipungani is a dream destination for those seeking a true ’get away from it all ’desert island holiday.

Kipungani is one of Africa’s most remote, relaxing, and richly romantic coastal hideaways comprising twelve delightfully spacious bandas constructed entirely from local materials, with mkeka palm floors and makuti thatch roofs woven by the residents of neighbouring Kipungani village.

The large interiors are the epitome of rustic simplicity, with giant king-size beds and furniture all handmade from local mangrove and palm woods. Each banda has an ocean-facing veranda with local funzi sofas and chairs piled high with colourful cushions. Amenities include freshwater showers, flush toilets, and separate dressing areas with wash basins.

The indulgent, sunset-facing lounge and bar are designed for complete relaxation, with cushion-piled driftwood furniture, hanging moon-beds and an eclectic array of natural discoveries combed from the surrounding, white sanded beaches. The dining room nestles comfortably in a small tropical garden, with an adjoining library offering guests a selection of books, magazines and board-games. In front of the building is a horizon-touching swimming pool which offers the perfect venue for the ultimate romantic sundowner!

When it is time to break away from your sun lounger, Kipungani provides a host of exciting activities, from fishing and kayaking to snorkelling and swimming with “Africa’s friendliest dolphins” on the reefs of Kinyika and Manda Toto. Fishing and sundowner cruises are available on the lodge’s 35-foot Arab dhow. Visits can also be arranged to Lamu’s historic mosques, markets and museums, as well as day trips to the ruined 14th century fort on neighbouring Manda Island.

When you visit Kipungani, you become part of a closely-knit community and help to conserve this exquisite piece of paradise. The lodge enjoys a uniquely harmonious relationship with the residents of neighbouring Kipungani Village, from where most of its staff hail. Guests have helped to build and equip a model primary school in the village, and recently helped to build and staff its first permanent health clinic, in partnership with the Canadian charity ADRA. The property also supports the planting of indigenous trees and the promotion of vital marine and mangrove conservation messages in the area.
