Tortilis Camp is a charming, rustic tented camp, shaded by a natural forest of acacia tortilis thorn trees after which the camp is named. The trees and shrubs bustle with bird life and the views seem endless across the plains to Kilimanjaro and Mount Meru in Tanzania. Tortilis offers guests a magical escape from the everyday hustle and bustle of life and invokes feelings of awe as you look out from the camp to the magnificent mountains. This camp has earned an international reputation for its commitment to the environment with its rustic simplicity, unobtrusive design and attention to comfort without compromising the ecosystem.
Location:
Situated on the edge of Amboseli National Game Reserve, on the southern border of Kenya, overlooking Mount Kilimanjaro.
Accommodation and facilities:
Accommodation comprises seventeen spacious tents, raised on wooden decks and shaded with thatched roofs. Each tent leads from a bedroom with expansive king-size or twin beds, through a dressing area into a modern bathroom with pressured hot showers and flush toilets. All tents benefit from a large veranda, ideal for an early afternoon siesta. The camp also has a ’Family Tent’, comprising two en suite tents with a lounge and dining area in between. It is set in a private part of the camp and is ideal for families travelling together. Meals at Tortilis are a delight - North Italian traditional recipes from the owner’s family cookbook, complemented by delicious salads and herbs grown in the camp’s own garden. The camp has a superb swimming pool, a gift shop, massage service, and an airstrip.
Activities:
Tortilis Camp offers a wide range of activities including early morning and late afternoon game drives, horse riding and guided game walks led by a Maasai expert outside the game park.
Special attractions:
Guests can experience a visit to one of the Maasai manyattas (villages) to meet the Maasai women and watch the Morans - young warriors – dance.
