Campi ya Kanzi or, in KiSwahili ’Camp of the Hidden Treasure’ certainly lives up to its name! Campi ya Kanzi is owned by the local Maasai community allowing you to enjoy true ecotourism and play an active role in the conservation of the land and of the Maasai culture. The camp lies within Maasai private land in Southern Kenya, dominated by Mt. Kilimanjaro, just 35 miles away. Connecting three national parks (Chyulu, Tsavo and Amboseli), the property is home to a vast wildlife and birdlife population. Here, your safari will be tailormade for you according to your personal desires resulting in an experience that is more like visiting a friend’s house, not a hotel for tourists.
Location:
Situated within Kuku Group Ranch in southern Kenya.
Accommodation and facilities:
A maximum of fourteen guests are accommodated in six thatched roof tented cottages and in the Hemingway and Simba suites. Each tented cottage enjoys a different view, and accommodates one or two adults. An extra bed can be added for a child. All have either twin beds or a king-size bed, made at the camp with local logs, with linen imported from Italy. A table, two safari chairs, a colonial trunk, shelves and daily fresh flowers complete the interior décor. The suites feature king-size beds and a dressing room between the bedroom and the bathroom. All tented cottages feature a bath with shower, bidet, basin, flush toilet and electric light. Brass plumbing fixtures add an unexpected touch of elegance with hot and cold running water. Each tented cottage has a wide veranda to provide superb views of Mount Kilimanjaro, the Tsavo Hills, and the Chyulu Hills.
Activities:
Game drives in open Land Rovers, Tsavo and Chyulu National Park excursions, Maasai cultural village visits. There are superb forest and escorted game walks and excellent birding. Mobile camping is available as are air excursions, including a Kilimanjaro scenic flight.
Special attractions:
The camp has its own commercial pilot who can fly you over the Snows of Kilimanjaro or The Green Hills of Africa (the Chyulu Hills) or over the magnificent wilderness of Tsavo West National Park in search of elephants. The flight will take you close to the highest mountain of Africa to see the snowy peaks, the forests and the valleys of the old lava flows. Staying at Campi ya Kanzi is experiencing real responsible eco-tourism: the Maasai Wilderness Conservation Trust receives $70 per guest for every night spent at Kanzi.
