The Okavango Delta -’the jewel of the Kalahari’ - is the world’s largest inland delta, made up of an intricate network of channels and lagoons, and one of Africa’s most pristine wilderness areas. A magical water world in the midst of the Kalahari, the crystal clear waters spreading into flood plains, lily ponds and papyrus swamps creating a superb haven for all forms of wildlife. Visitors can glide silently through the clear waters in mokoros (dugout canoes) absorbing the scenery in company with the occasional hippo or elephant, enjoy the thrill and excitement of a game drive and marvel at the delicate beauty of over 550 species of birds - then sit back and relax over a sumptuous dinner served under the thatch of their camp and star studded African sky.
The Delta provides a seasonal habitat to numerous different species with the best time for game viewing in the May - October period when the animal life is concentrated along the flooded areas and the vegetation has dried out. The wealth of wildlife you will experience includes elephant and buffalo, hippopotamus, lechwe, topi, wildebeest, giraffe, Nile crocodile, lion, cheetah, leopard, hyena, wild dog, sable antelope, both the black and white rhinoceros, zebra, warthog and chacma baboon.
Birdlife in the Delta is truly outstanding - ranging from water birds to shy forest dwellers, this is one of the only places in Africa where you might spot wattled crane, slaty egret, Pels fishing owl, palm-nut vulture, crowned crane, red ibis, sunbird, malachite kingfisher, and bataleur, fish and snake eagles.
