Strikingly situated under acacia trees in the Makgadikgadi Pans, shaded from the savage beauty of a forgotten Africa, you stumble across Jack’s Camp. Not just a safari, but also a complete desert experience, focusing on species unique to the area. It is the only place where guests are virtually guaranteed to see the rare and elusive brown hyena and are able to walk through the Kalahari with a gang of habituated, yet wild meerkats.
Location:
Situated on a tree and palm covered island on the edge of the Makgadikgadi Salt Pans in the Kalahari Desert.
Accommodation and facilities:
Ten large walk-in traditional green canvas tents, en suite bathroom facilities including shower, basin, flush toilet and outside shower. The camp’s hub is a romantic canvas pavilion of low spires and finials, with a fluttering valance beneath. Three poles support the main chamber where everyone meets for lavish and elegant meals at a long communal dining table. Adjacent to this is a drinks tent and library. There is also a tea tent with Persian carpet floor, chess set and wind-up gramophone.
Activities:
Day and night game drives in open 4x4 Landcruisers, a morning with the suricate (meerkat), quad bikes (only during dry season and rain permitting), game walks with Bushman trackers and birding.
Special attractions:
While at Jack’s Camp you will have the opportunity to explore undocumented archaeological sites to search for stone tools and fossils left in the area by early settlements. You may also wish to visit Chapman’s Baobab, the campsite of Livingstone, Selous and Baines. Game viewing will include unique desert species such as suricate (meerkats), brown hyena, aardvark, aardwolf, gemsbok and springbok.
